The Holidays are fast approaching, and so are those family gatherings. Every year I spend hours baking from scratch a Death By Chocolate Cake or DBC Brownies. I even go as far as decorating it for the holidays with candy canes, peppermints and even gingerbread cookies. I pour a lot of love and energy into these desserts for my family. They are overly enjoyed by family also. However, I have to endure double edged complements like “This is amazing, Is not those special brownies are they?” or “Did you make it a “special” cake this year? Chuckle’ Chuckle” as they take huge chunks of cake. These comments hurt every year. I know I am not the only Stoner out there who has to endure comments from well meaning family.
Understand that there is no ill intent from families when they put us threw this joking ridicule. It is not their fault that the media and movie industry has portrayed the Cannabis community in such a light. Last year I had it up to my eyeballs with the comments. It had progressed from jokes at family reunions and holidays to EVERY house I visited for brunch and brought a dish. Everyone I visited had some double-edged comment about the fantastic dish I brought. I never left with any leftovers. It made me want to stop coming or show up empty handed. The comments start to chafe after a while. I am still mocked even though there have been many times I explained that cannabis consumers don’t ‘dose’ people or bring edibles to events where children or non-cannabis consumers would have access to them.
This year I am tempted to show up with store bought pre-packed brownies and boring store-bought cake, but I just can’t miss the opportunity to educate, and I am not missing out on my cake! Last year I offered to bring a pan of medicated brownies… and two Aunts and a Cousin got a little excited. So, we shall see what happens this year…. Maybe I will call their bluff and bring a batch of special brownies. Of course, they will be away from the kiddos and under wraps from those who do not want them. I wonder if I will leave with leftovers!
